Delaware County Has Refurbished Three of Its Bridges Since July

Delaware County officials cut the ribbon on the New Road Bridge in Aston Township.

The New Road Bridge in Aston is the latest bridge to get a ribbon cutting in Delaware County, writes Justin Udo for KYW Newsradio.

It’s the third bridge reopening in the county since July.

PennDOT crews spent a year and a half rebuilding the nearly century-old bridge.

“I’m ecstatic,” said Aston resident Larry Curry said.. “The day I heard it was opened, I rode down here and rode across it three or four times just to ride across it.”

The original 1931 bridge had long exceeded its lifespan.

“We stand here on a new 125-foot single-span steel girder bridge that will serve the community for years to come,” said Delaware County Councilmember Christine Reuther.

Delaware County has already invested more than $11 million on bridges this year and it plans to build two more bridges in 2025.

That will leave just four of the county’s 43 bridges structurally deficient, “a far cry from where it was,” Reuther said.

Back in July, the Tribbett Avenue Bridge across Hermesprota Creek in Darby Township and the Manchester Avenue Bridge linking Middletown, Nether Providence and Upper Providence over Ridley Creek were reopened.
