Swarthmore College has achieved a third-place ranking among liberal arts colleges in the U.S., according to a U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges list.
The college, founded by Quakers in 1864, earned high marks from U.S. News for offering courses at nearby college and for its extensive student activities, writes Damon D. Williams for USA Today Network, as reported in phillyburbs.com.
“Swarthmore College students can take courses at Bryn Mawr College and Haverford College through the Tri-College Consortium,” U.S. News reported.
“Unlike most other liberal arts colleges, Swarthmore also offers an undergraduate engineering program,” and has more than 100 organizations that students can join on campus, it reported.
U.S News also ranked Swarthmore College as having the fourth-best writing in the disciplines program and fifth-best senior capstone.
It listed the college as providing the fifth-best overall value.
Nancy Grace Roman, dubbed “the mother of the Hubble Telescope,” is a graduate of Swarthmore. Roman, who died in 2018, was an astronomer and NASA’s first female executive. .
Former Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis is also a Swarthmore College alum.
Swarthmore College’s tuition plus fees runs about $65,494 per year.
