The damage done to people’s lives and to their property from hurricanes is obvious, but animals, too, suffer in the devastation and its aftermath.

One Delaware County shelter is stepping in to help pets in Georgia that have lost their homes to Hurricane Helene, writes John McDevitt for KYW Newsradio.

Last Sunday, Providence Animal Shelter in Media accepted 21 dogs and puppies from a shelter in Georgia

Victoria Bernosky, chief operations officer at the Providence Animal Center, said they took animals that were already homeless in Georgia shelters before Hurricane Helene came through so the shelter would have more room for animals displaced by the storm.

“So people still have that opportunity to try and find their pet as things get put back together,” Bernosky said.

The shelter could take more, but is limited by state quarantine rules that require dogs be quarantined for 14 days before adoption.

“So we only have a certain number of kennels that can be quarantined, so if I can get these guys that are here into foster care for the next two weeks, I will have all of those kennels open to be able to bring more,” Bernosky said.
