Foster families and youth who have aged out of the system are getting some help from a nonprofit called Well Rooted started by two Haverford women, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Lifelong friends Katie Casey and Sarah Todd created Well Rooted a year and a half ago to support families and youth that experience gaps in the foster care system.

So far, they’ve helped 12 young adults and more than 30 families.

Katie Casey and her husband Mike started fostering eight years ago.

Sarah Todd and her husband Jim soon followed, acquiring their license to foster in January 2000.

Their foster child had been through a lot of trauma before staying with the Todds and it was difficult.

Both families realized how challenging it was to be a foster family and wanted to offer support.

They began connecting with others, including with the biological families that wanted to get their kids back home.

“We wanted to provide support to prevent families from falling apart again,” Casey said.

Support can be as simple as taking meals to new foster parents, or running errands.

The message, Casey said, is, “You’re not in this alone.”
