The Upper Darby School Board is looking at a $1 million Evolv weapons detection system after 2 gun scares at Upper Darby High School.

Upper Darby School District is considering installing a million-dollar weapons detection system at its high school and two middle schools after 2 gun scares, reports Madeleine Wright for CBS 3 Philadelphia.

The school board will discuss and vote on the proposal at a special session Tuesday evening, Sept. 24.

The detection system, which relies on AI software, is the same type used at Lincoln Financial Field.

It can detect a wide range of weapons, from AR15-style rifles, to shotguns, handguns and pipe bombs, said Upper Darby Superintendent Daniel McGarry.

The school board is proposing to install the technology at Upper Darby High School, as well as Drexel Hill and Beverly Hills Middle Schools.

Two recent firearms-related incidents have prompted the move. On Sept. 3, an Upper Darby High School student brought a gun to school. Ten days later, another student brought an AR15 Style magazine.

Jane Rogiani, whose daughter goes to Drexel Hill Middle School, is in favor of the detection system.

“I think it’s a fabulous idea. It would be nice if they actually implement it before somebody gets hurt,” she said.
