Delaware County-based Wawa has been beloved in New Jersey and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic for decades and its strategic expansion into New Jersey is a success, reports the Shore News Network.

It’s combination of tradition and innovation has helped Wawa establish a loyal customer base.

But it’s dominance in New Jersey is not guaranteed as it is being increasingly challenged.

QuickChek, another major Garden State player, has its roots in the state.  Founded in 1967 in Dunellen, New Jersey, QuickChek was, like Wawa, a family-run operation that quickly expanded.

Like Wawa, it’s known for Its fresh food, including made-to-order subs and coffee and also, like Wawa, has mobile ordering and self-checkout.

Newer to New Jersey, Royal Farms brings its own unique quality food offering of fresh fried chicken and 24-hour service. It has been opening strategic New Jersey stores that reach customers who might otherwise go to Wawa or QuickChek.

At the same time, 7-Eleven, a global convenience store industry giant, has been creating “superstations,” larger, more versatile stores with more fresh food options, groceries, and expanded service beyond the traditional convenience store.

The superstations are now competing directly with Wawa.
