Thanks to Dedicated Volunteers, Historic Carousel at Pottstown Back in Action
A Pottstown historic carousel is once again up and running after a decades-long hiatus thanks to the dedication of a group of committed volunteers, reports Todd Haas for 6abc.
“It’s a work of art, really,” said State Rep. Joe Ciresi. “If you just come in, if you don’t want to ride it, just look at it. It’s unbelievable how beautiful it is. And to know the people volunteered to restore it.”
The old-fashioned ride dates back to 1905 and is the second-oldest carousel in the country.
“People who come here just love it,” said BJ Peterman, Board President of the Carousel of Pottstown. “It’s just a huge community draw. This carousel was found in a barn in Lancaster County, and we were able to purchase it. And then the restoration project started.”
It took 22 years to fully restore the carousel. Now that it is fully back in operation, the carousel is the host for many events, from birthday parties to christening parties as well as weddings.
“A dedicated group of volunteers spent countless hours working on this for over 20 years to get it to where it is today,” said Peterman.
