Jovana Sekulic got the call back in May that she would be part of the U.S. women’s water polo team at the Paris Olympics, a team that is going after their fourth straight gold medal, writes Matthew DeGeorge for the Daily Times.

In a way, being part of the U.S. team completes a family journey for Sekulic.

Sekulic’s parents, Sladjana and Goran, emigrated from Belgrade, Serbia, when Jovana was 10 so their kids would have a chance at a better future.

The 21-year-old Media resident played water polo in Serbia, where the sport is popular, and continued with the sport while a student at Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square.

She continued to excel in water polo at Princeton University.

Sekulic was on Team USA at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, then won gold at the Pan Am games in Chile and gold at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

“America embraced my family and I with open arms,” she said. “This is my team and my country, and I’m playing for my country. I feel both nations as parts of my identity, and I’m so grateful to have both of them.”
