Prospect Medical wants state funds to help seal a deal with a potential buyer for Crozer Health.

There’s a prospective unnamed buyer for Crozer Health, but Crozer’s owner, Prospect Medical Holdings, wants the state to put up between $100 million and $500 million to finance the deal, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

PA Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office said it “will not entertain any requests for a taxpayer bailout of a for-profit company.”

Prospect has been trying to sell the 4-hospital Delaware County group under a court-approved agreement with the state Attorney General’s Office and The Foundation for Delaware County.

Prospect indicated in an email it is in the process of negotiating a sale agreement.

“As part of this framework, we reached out to Gov. [Josh] Shapiro’s office last week to request the Commonwealth’s support for the transaction,” Prospect said. “We understand that this process will take some time and we appreciate the willingness of the Governor and area legislators to consider our collective request.”

Gov. Shapiro’s spokesperson, Manuel Bonder, said the governor’s office is not considering any proposal “that would use taxpayer money to relieve Prospect of its financial obligations during any transaction.”

The Shapiro Administration is willing to work with all parties to transition Crozer Health to a stable, non-profit ownership, Bonder added.
