Cheyney Has Accreditation Reaffirmed and Probation Status Removed
Cheyney University has had its accreditation reaffirmed by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and is no longer on probation, writes Ryan Mulligan for Philadelphia Business Journal.
Cheyney, the oldest historically Black college or university in the nation, was placed on probation in November. Its accreditation status was listed as “in jeopardy,” according to the Commission.
It was questioning whether the school was in compliance with a number of required standards.
The probationary status ended June 27.
The university said in a statement that “while we agree with this decision, we remain disappointed by the process to arrive at this long-overdue outcome and will continue to advocate for equity and transparency,” the university said.
Back in February, the school’s board of trustees wrote a letter to the Commission stating that it had addressed their concerns and implemented new strategies, adopting commission recommendations, but still had not had their probationary status revisited.
Even PA Gov. Josh Shapiro weighed in, urging the Commission to “reverse Cheyney’s probationary status and allow the institution to resume its historic role in educating students.”
Cheyney University was founded in 1837 and is part of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
