Norristown’s Cavan Sullivan the Youngest Player in MLS History
Cavan Sullivan, a Norristown native, became the youngest player in MLS history after he got his first minutes during this week’s Philadelphia Union win against the New England Revolution, writes Ali Rampling for The Athletic.
Sullivan, with 14 years and 293 days, beat the long-standing record that had been held by former U.S. international Freddy Adu. He debuted for DC United when he was 14 years and 306 days old in April 2004.
“Tomorrow he will be in the 20 because he’s earned that,” said Philadelphia’s head coach Jim Curtin ahead of the game. “If you look at his performances in the Union II games, the goals that he has scored, Cavan has earned the right.”
Sullivan signed with Philadelphia Union in May with the most lucrative homegrown contract in the history of MLS. He became the youngest player in the team’s history to be added to the first team roster as well as the fifth youngest player in MLS history to sign a first-team contract.
When Sullivan turns 18, he will transfer to Manchester City.
“Cavan is undeniably a rare and extraordinary talent,” said Ernst Tanner, Philadelphia Union sporting director.
