Casey Schaum is a Pillar of the Skateboarding Community in Chester County
Casey Schaum is a passionate skateboarder who grew up in West Chester, writes J.F. Pirro for Main Line Today.
Coached by his father, Andy Schaum, he was a West Side Little League All-Star until he was 12, always wanting to be involved in team sports. He graduated from Penn State in 2017 with a degree in recreation, parks, and tourism management. However, his true passion lay in skateboarding.
In 2018, Schaum moved to California as the operations manager for Woodward Tahoe, one of five “youth experience” camps owned by action-sports industry giant POWDR. In this position, he oversees the skateboarding camp.
“All the things I’ve always dabbled in have now become part of what I do year-round,” Schaum said.
While Schaum admits that he’s not a pro-skater, saying his skills are “extended college level.” He has minor sponsorships from Independent Truck Company, DLXSF in San Francisco, and Totally Board in Truckee, but he’s not making consistent money from skating.
Now that skateboarding is an Olympic sport, some might think that Schaum missed his opportunity.
To that, he responded, “It’s pretty hard to judge skateboarding, and most of us don’t even like the attention. It’s mostly about the counterculture.”
Schaum hopes that the Olympics help grow the number of skateparks around the world.
