Each year SCORE Chester and Delaware Counties recognizes owners and entrepreneurs that have demonstrated unique vision, innovation, and achievement in support of our local economy and small business community.

Congratulations to the six small businesses and nonprofits honored on June 6 at the annual Small Business Achievements Awards event at Penn Oaks Golf Club in West Chester.

Meet Award-Winner May Szybist, founder and director of Coaching, and Bob Szybist, director of Leadership Programs

With SCORE’s support, Mary and Bob are setting up their business to train and coach today’s leaders in corporations and nonprofits.

Pivot Mindset’s mission is to provide high impact leadership programs that support organizational well-being and engagement. The company’s founders, Mary and Bob Szybist, have 20 years of experience in the fields of business, psychology and education, and are ready to train and coach today’s leaders.

According to the company website, the emphasis is on, “We help people lead well” focusing on their belief that “Organizational strength begins with individual wellness.”

Their programs include insightful and inspiring keynote speeches; leadership training that enhances emotional intelligence, strengthens psychological flexibility and builds psychological safety; and 1:1 coaching sessions…

Over the years together, Mary and Bob have developed and refined complementary skill sets in the areas of training and coaching, and decided it was the right time to collaborate on a new amazing adventure – starting their own business.

How SCORE helped

The Pivot Mindset Program reached out to SCORE for mentoring and began working with Jeff Petrick in late 2023. Jeff has been guiding Mary and Bob through the top priorities of setting up a business and providing references and resources to help.

This includes business planning, defining ideal target audiences and their unmet needs, establishing a legal business entity and all the critical steps needed for a successful startup.

Mary and Bob described Jeff as a “Champion for us; he believes in our work.  He is our anchor and our sounding board.”

SCORE’s marketing subject matter expert, Dave Gerhardt, was engaged to provide in-depth recommendations for the company website. He gave valuable insights including a focus on how the customer will benefit from the program, blogs that differentiate from others and adding testimonials and case studies. 

The Pivot Mindset owners have been very thoughtful in developing a disciplined logical path to bring their business idea to fruition with SCORE’s guidance.
