The Penn Wood High School in Lansdowne is slated for a $115 million expansion.

A $115 million Penn Wood High School expansion is coming. Work will start in March 2025 and end in August 2027, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

The work will create a modern-day learning environment for students, with flexible classrooms and small group meeting areas.

“The expansion creates spaces that support a 21st-century learning environment with a focus on STEM/STEAM that we cannot currently achieve without a renovation,” William Penn Business Administrator Robert Kaufmann said.

The goal is to minimize the project’s tax impact by using an annual $35 million in additional shortfall funding from the state, or securing grants.

A new three-story addition to the high school will be built and the main entrance moved from Green Street to Essex Avenue.

Coming to the school will be adequately sized science labs, makerspaces, vocational spaces, a TV studio/podcasting studio, larger spaces for music and arts, a large business center, a gym that can support a PIAA tournament and a larger cafeteria to accommodate additional students.

The school could also see a new roof, façade repair and window replacement.

Renovations are also planned for the Cypress Street school that now houses the ninth graders, who would relocate to the upgraded high school.
