Delaware County Food Donations Get a Boost With Fresh Garden Produce
The community group Grands Stepping Up is supplementing donations for the food insecure in Delaware County with fresh produce grown in their own community garden at New Liberty Baptist Church in Aston.
There are tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and peppers, reports Marcella Baietto for Philadelphia CBS News.
“A lot of the time when you are food insecure you’re getting cans. You’re getting stuff that people have out of the goodness of their heart donated, but it’s not always fresh,” said Erik Schroeder, a board member with Grands Stepping Up.
That’s where the garden comes in.
“Having a place where we can provide fresh produce to supplement some of that. It just gives them that little extra pop,” Schroeder said.
Grands Stepping Up was started by Karen Barnes, who saw the need to provide resources to support grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.
One of those grandparents was New Liberty Baptist Church Pastor Michael Wilps. He decided to open up the church’s playground and create space for the new garden.
“Being a grandparent is the greatest thing in the world but as you get older you could use a little help. Grand stepping up really helps people,” said Pastor Wilps.
