Boeing Laying Off 69 Employees at Ridley Plant Even As New Contracts Come In
Boeing is laying off 69 employees from its Ridley plant, effective Aug. 16, according to a state filing, but there’s nothing unusual in the move, according to a Boeing spokesman.
The majority of the positions are hourly employees, including 35 aircraft technicians, writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Others facing layoffs include assemblers, final assembly inspectors, janitors and painters.
The layoffs were reported in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.
Boeing said the layoffs are the result of “adjusting our production rates to accommodate future orders and sustain manufacturing capabilities to support customer needs.”
“This activity is a normal part of a program’s lifecycle, with adjustments being necessary to meet demand,” a Boeing spokesperson said in a statement.
Boeing employs about 4,000 people at the nearly 3-million-square-foot Ridley complex.
The plant is Boeing’s headquarters of its Vertical Lift division for military helicopter production.
While Boeing did receive two major contracts that will mean ramping up hiring, output at Ridley is slightly less than normal in the next year until those contracts start.
