With enrollment up, Eastern University in St. David’s announced last week a $30 million fundraising goal to cover capital projects, invest in school sports teams and offer incentives to attract faculty, writes Ryan Mulligan for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The private Christian college, which turns 100 in 2025, has raised about 50 percent of the amount so far.

The Eastern student population has increased 135 percent, from 3,100 students in 2019 to 6,992 students as of December.

The university has had great success attracting students to its online programs, which account for about 82 percent of the student body.

“Witnessing the growth and development taking place on our campus and within our community have been remarkable,” President Ronald Matthews said in a statement. “This particular initiative is a pivotal milestone within our strategic plan to bolster and support that growth.”

The campaign funding will target the on-campus experience, including expansion of the former Workman Hall, now Templeton Hall, as well as support student clubs, activities and athletics.

The school added a football program last year, along a pep band, women’s flag football, plus dance and cheer teams.

The fundraising should also help students with scholarships and study abroad programs.
