Haverford is hoping a new Safe Streets for All plan will make its outdated streets safer.

Haverford Township’s older streets just weren’t built to handle the volume of modern traffic, so a plan is being created to make Haverford streets safe, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

A “Safe Streets for All” study recently got underway with a virtual introduction meeting and an online survey.

“We have a ton of old traffic patterns and old signage. It’s kind of the old way of thinking, and what we’d like to do is take a fresh look at it. So this gives us a great opportunity to do that,” Township Manager Dave Burman said.

The Philadelphia-based planning firm CHPlanning Ltd. has been contracted to create a township-wide safety action plan.

The plan is a prerequisite under the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All program to receive money under the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

“What we love about this is being able to create a plan and then potentially having the opportunity to fund actionable items in our own community to make it more accessible for our pedestrians and bikes,” said Judy Trombetta, vice president of the Haverford Township Board of Commissioners.

Focus groups are taking place for community input.
