Under coach Greg Meehan, a 1994 graduate of Cardinal O’Hara High School, Stanford University has been building an elite women’s swimming program, writes Guerby Ruuska for Swimming World magazine.

Last year, the Cardinals clinched their first NCAA team title since 1998.

Meehan, who swam collegiately at Rider University, was hired by Stanford in 2012. Prior to that, he was associate head coach of the men’s team at Cal. He also served as head coach of the men’s and women’s teams at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. Before Pacific, Meehan was an assistant at UCLA.

In 2016, he was selected to be an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s Olympic Swimming Team.

At Stanford, Meehan has the responsibility of coaching arguably the greatest female freestyler of all time Katie Ledecky, a five-time Olympic gold medalist and 14-time world champion.

“I absolutely love my job and the people I’m surrounded by, and they make it easy to be excited every day,” said Meehan. “On deck, my goal is to be consistent in my messaging and my personality.”
