Olympic archery coach Cindy Bevilacqua encourages more girls and women to take up archery.

It’s time for more women and girls to get involved in archery, said Olympic archery coach Cindy Bevilacqua, president of the Middletown Archery Club.

Right now, the sport is dominated by men, writes Madeleine Wright for CBS News Philadelphia.

The Delaware County native has won her own archery over the last 40 years and coached the American archery team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

“I wish there were more female coaches at the higher level,” she said.

There’s been progress. More women and girls are participating in archery these days, fueled by the entertainment industry.

“It’s growing a lot since a lot of the um, TV, with the Hunger Games and then the Olympics and then Brave,” Bevilacqua said.

Bevilacqua traces her archery roots back to when she was 5.

As a head coach, she’s been able to bring thousands to archery, including 17-year-old Anna Helmig, who uses a wheelchair.

“It’s hard to get over that hump of like, oh, I can’t do it,” Helmig said. “But the most rewarding part is when you realize that you can do it.”

She looks up to Bevilacqua as a role model.
