Delaware County voters could be asked in a November referendum if they are willing to pay for trails, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Previous funds available for trail development have dried up, so Delaware County Council is considering a referendum on the November ballot to see if taxpayers are willing to fund trail work.

County Councilwoman Elaine Paul Schaefer said the county is at a crossroads.

“The funding that was so abundant over the last four years has been allocated, and we have competing demands that are pushing out the ability for us to continue funding, so we need more money,” she said.

Schaefer said the county has already invested much money in the Delco Green Ways program, which distributes funds for municipalities to create open space and recreation.

Since October 2019, the program has provided funds to municipalities and nonprofits for 117 projects, creating open space, developing trails, building parks, making recreational improvements, and doing other engineering, planning, or design projects.

Delaware County continues to work on transforming its newest as yet unnamed park at the former Don Guanella property. A master plan was approved last July.
