Guests were invited to experience a New York Chinatown wedding.

Swarthmore College graduate Dominic Sonkowsky, now an urban planner, and Harry Trinh, head of creative at the nonprofit Welcome to Chinatown wanted their shared heritage to be part of their wedding, so they invited guests to a special New York Chinatown nuptial celebration.

Guests experienced events throughout Chinatown, from a tea ceremony to a Cantonese banquet, writes Kaitlin Menza for The Cut.

The wedding included outfits, food, and décor that were all modern interpretations of Chinese culture.

“We wanted it to be a reflection of the community that we’ve built in New York, in Chinatown, Dominic said.

The couple met on Tinder as undergrads.  Dominic was a sophomore, and Harry was a senior at an art college in Baltimore.  Their first date was Dec. 4, 2015, in the Philadelphia region. They had lunch in Chinatown, a visit to the Barnes Collection, and then Longwood Gardens.

For their wedding, the goal was to do everything hyperlocal in Chinatown, Harry said.

“One thing we wish about our wedding is that it went a little slower. All these pieces coming together in all these places with all these people we love — I wish we had more time to take it all in!” Harry said.
