Flyer Alumni Game Includes Spry 80-Year-old Joe Watson
Ex-Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Joe Watson hasn’t let his advanced years keep him from the ice.
You’ll still find him playing a bit of hockey, writes Sam Carchiidi for Philly Hockey Now.
Watson was a key member of the Flyers during their two Stanley Cup championships—in 1974 and 1975.
When Flyers alumni gather Jan. 26 for a game against the Boston Bruins, Watson will be there, the oldest player on the ice for Philly. He was prompted to play by Brad Marsh, former Flyer and president of the alumni association.
“I certainly wasn’t planning on playing,” a chuckling Watson said. “And Brad says, ‘Why don’t you come out and play, and that’ll mean you’ve played in seven decades?’
Watson decided to go for it.
“I never was a fast skater anyway, so what the hell? I’ll stay in neutral most of the time,” Watson cracked.
The last time he skated, it was with his 8-year-old grandson, Watson Riley, at the IceWorks in Aston, owned by Watson’s brother, Jimmy.
He’ll be prepping for the alumni game by skating with his grandson.
When asked if he would do anything special against the Bruins, he replied, “Just stand up.”
