First Woman Dean at Temple’s Medical School Grew Up in Broomall
Broomall’s Amy Goldberg is a trauma surgeon who has worked at Temple University Hospital for 30 years,
She’s also Temple’s first woman dean at its 120-year-old Lewis Katz School of Medicine, writes Abraham Gutman for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Goldberg is making the most of her post to elevate other women. She celebrated her one-year anniversary as dean in October by hosting a “celebration of Temple Health women.”
“It was fabulous,” she said of the opportunity to recognize women. Many women juggle childcare responsibilities in addition to demanding jobs, she noted.
Being local, Goldberg has spent most of her education and career in Philadelphia.
She went to the University of Pennsylvania and returned to Philadelphia for her surgical residency after attending medical school in New York.
“If I was going to be a trauma surgeon, there was only one place,” she said, “right here at Temple,” she said.
Goldberg oversees admission policies and plans to cultivate more diversity in the next generation of physicians, particularly in the male-dominated surgical field.
She’s also working to combat inequities in healthcare and wants medical students to become compassionate physicians who understand their patients’ needs.
