Katayoun Copeland has announced she is running in the Republican primary for Pennsylvania Attorney General.

Katayoun “Kat” Copeland, an Upper Darby native who has a history with the Delaware County District Attorney’s office, is a Republican candidate for Pennsylvania Attorney General, writes Chris Brennan for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Copeland was an assistant district attorney in Delaware County from 1992 to 2011 before leaving to become a federal prosecutor in Philadelphia.

The Delaware County Board of Judges appointed her district attorney in 2018 to fill a vacancy left by John J. Whelan, who became a judge.

She lost the position in a 2019 election to Democrat Jack Stollsteimer.

She could potentially face off again against Stollsteimer again.

The Democrat just won a second term as district attorney in Delaware County but is considered the imminent candidate in the Democratic primary for state attorney general.

Copeland, who returned to her work as a federal prosecutor after the 2019 election, resigned on Nov. 16 in conjunction with her candidacy decision.

“I think there will be several strong candidates in the Republican primary, but I know that Kat Copeland would be a terrific Attorney General,” said former U.S. Attorney Bill McSwain, Copelad’s boss at one time.
