Delaware County voters mostly maintained the status quo in Tuesday's election, returning Democrats to key county government positions.

Democrats easily maintained control of Delaware County government in Tuesday’s election, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Three seats open on Delaware County Council went to the Democratic incumbents Monica Taylor, Elaine Paul Schaefer, and Christine Reuther.

The GOP offered challengers in Bill Dennon, Jeffrey Jones, and Joy Schwartz but were unable to budge Delaware County voters into making any changes.

Delaware County Democratic Committee Chair Colleen Guiney credited the work that Democrats have done in office.

“More and more individuals in our county are seeing that Democrats know how to build things, how to fix things, and how to govern,” Guiney said. “I really think the key is Democrats problem solve, they fix things, they want good government.”

The GOP lost control of Delaware County in 2019 for the first time since the Civil War.

The only outlier was the retention of three Delaware County Common Pleas judges, Richard M. Cappelli, Barry C. Dozor, and William “Chip” Mackrides.  Voters opted to return the three Republicans to another 10-year term on the bench despite a call by the local Democratic committee to oust them.

Of 406,014 registered Delaware County voters, 153,000, or 37 percent, voted on Tuesday.
