The Bridges of Delaware County. Here’s How We Rank in the State

There are more than 600,000 bridges in the United States. That’s about 14.7 bridges per 100 miles of public roadway, according to the federal government.

Pennsylvania is the state with the 11th most bridges in the country, with 19.2 bridges for every 100 miles of public road, reports Stacker.

Delaware County can lay claim to some of those bridges, according to an analysis of 2020 statistics from the Bureau of Transportation by TruckInfo.net.

On a top 50 list of the Pennsylvania counties with the most bridges, Delaware County was 22nd on the list. 

It has 1.7 percent of Pennsylvania’s bridges, with 383 spanning the county’s roadways. Of those, 14.4 percent are in poor condition, according to the analysis.

Nearby Montgomery County has the second most bridges in the state, 3.4 percent, or 778. Its share of bridges in poor condition is 15.3 percent.

Chester County also ranks up there, placing fourth on the top 50 list. It has 682 bridges, about 3 percent of the bridges in the state. About 16 percent of its bridges are in poor condition.

Bucks County came in fifth on the list, with 675 bridges, 2.9 percent of the bridges in Pennsylvania.  About 20.3 percent of its bridges are in poor condition.
