Trish McFarland, the president of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce has learned a lot from her humble beginnings at Rita’s Water Ice, writes Ana Welsh for Main Line Tonight.

In 1994, the Philadelphia dessert chain opened in Drexel Hill, and 15-year-old Trish walked into the establishment to find a job opportunity. Her assertiveness led to her being hired on the spot.

The business leader applies the lessons she learned from her formative summer job to her career today.

As someone who oversees an organization to strengthen the business economy, McFarland learned how to manage customers and client expectations.

She recalls that summer day in 1994 when Rita’s had its grand opening, and a line of 100 customers waited outside the establishment. McFarland tells Main Line Tonight that she’s learned to apologize, and find a solution, but not take it personally if someone takes their frustrations out on her.

Another pivotal lesson was learning how to work with different colleagues. McFarland says that she made lots of friends and met people from many different backgrounds.
