Fine art is an untapped space that has mostly been reserved for investors who have millions to buy an entire painting, writes Diana Bird for Moneywise.

This provided them with a distinct advantage, as contemporary art has outperformed the S&P 500 for the last 26 years by 131 percent.

Now, a new platform has made it possible for accredited investors with at least $500,000 to tap into this previously inaccessible asset class and become owners of a piece of multimillion-dollar masterpieces.

Masterworks allows accredited investors to invest in paintings by world-famous artists such as Banksy, Picasso, Andy Warhol, and many more. The platform handles the entire process — from sourcing artwork, conducting due diligence, and purchasing. The platform also stores each artwork carefully to preserve it in pristine condition.

Do you trust the markets to take care of your future? In today’s economic environment, having options besides public stock, bonds, and mutual funds may reduce the risk in most portfolios.

Masterworks is driven by a team of more than 200 professionals, including an industry-leading art market research team.

Fred Hubler, CEO and Chief Wealth Strategist at Creative Capital Wealth Management Group in Chester Springs and a Forbes.com contributor, has worked with alternative investments since starting his firm more than 20 years ago.

“I enjoy watching the expansion of access to alternative investments,” he said. “My goal in starting CCWMG was to allow more people exposure to asset classes that are typically restricted to the ultra-wealthy. In the past 20 years, I’ve seen an increase in options available to every type of investor.”

Currently, there are more than 259 blue-chip artworks available for investing through Masterworks. Once you have invested in a painting, you can wait for the platform to sell it, which usually happens within three to 10 years. Alternatively, you can sell your shares on the secondary market to lock in returns earlier.
