A Delaware County state representative is behind a measure to find a new state song, reports CBS 3 Philadelphia.

The state legislature approved a resolution 138-64 to name an independent commission to come up with a new song. The resolution now goes to the Pennsylvania Senate.

There’s an existing state song, “Pennsylvania” by Eddie Khoury and Ronnie Bonner adopted in 1990 from 200 submissions.

Rep. Craig Williams (R-160), representing parts of Chester and Delaware Counties, said he first heard the song at the gubernatorial inauguration.

“It was a great performance of a bad piece of music,” he said. “I think we can do better.”

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Joe Ciresi, a Democrat from Montgomery County, said no one knows the existing song and feels it’s due for an update.

“This is something we should take pride in,” he said. “This is something every member of this chamber should be able to sing, even if you don’t sing well.”

If the Senate approves the bill, an independent commission of members of the House and Senate would solicit suggestions from the public and music experts, then make recommendations.
