Meet one of the top nurses in our area, Darlene Luther, MHSA, BSN, RN, one of several top nurses profiled by Kim Douglas in Main Line Today.

Luther, who was raised in Glenolden, started her career at Hahnemann University Hospital, but she’s spent the longest time, 33 years, at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park.

“I’ve seen patients from the community who remember that I took care of their mom or dad,” she said.

Despite experiencing the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s, she was still unprepared for the impact of COVID.

She remembers crying with her colleagues in their cars before going home.

Luther earned a nursing degree at Temple University and a master’s in health service at St. Joseph’s College of Maine.

She was an assistant clinical supervisor six months out of nursing school.

Working as an orthopedic nurse, she became assistant director of rehabilitation, then director.

And she’s done any odd job needed–pushing beds, installing air conditioners, and mopping floors.

“I’ll do what it takes to keep the building going,” she says. “The white coat comes off if a patient needs something. I’d do that for any department.”
