North Carolina is preparing for its first Wawa when the convenience store giant breaks ground next month on an Outer Banks store, right across U.S. 158  from a new Target, writes Kari Pugh for The Virginian-Pilot, as reported in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Wawa submitted a site plan to the town of Kill Devil Hills for a store at 1900 N. Croatan Highway.

The 6,000-square-foot store will have eight gas pumps, a canopy, 52 parking spaces, and two underground tanks.

U.S. 158 is the main route through the beach towns of Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head.

Though Wawa is new to the area, the store will be the third convenience store on the same block, sharing the neighborhood with Circle K and Speedway, which is rebranding as a 7-Eleven.

An opening date for the store has not been announced.  Company spokesman Jennifer Wolf said there will be construction updates and expansion plan announcements at a planned groundbreaking for the new store on May 12.

Wawa just opened its 1,000th store in South Jersey as its expansion continues into multiple states.

The closest Wawa store previously to the Outer Banks was in Chesapeake, Virginia.
