Delaware County Man Discovers in His 70s He Was Adopted

By

Ed Grunwell, a Boothwyn man had lived well into his 70s when he suddenly discovered he was adopted, writes Dawn Timmenney for Fox 29.

Grunwell, 77, choked back tears as he talked about learning he was one of 13 children in a family he never knew.

“I still have six brothers and sisters left, two half-siblings and the other four are my full siblings,” he said. “You can’t have too much family.”

Grunwell was adopted as an infant by Pete and Rose Grunwell of Ridley Park and grew up happy as the couple’s only son.

Then in 2019, he and his wife Doreen submitted DNA to Ancestry.com, showing a possible match for a cousin.

A relative reached out after seeing Ed and Doreen’s photos on Facebook.  A friend from Ed’s adopted family confirmed to Doreen in January 2020 that he was adopted.

His birth mother, Libby Weaver, and father, Charles West, were not married and had given him up for adoption, but never told him.

“We don’t know the circumstances. My birth parents had a hard decision to make,” Ed said. “They did what they thought was right. My adopted family did what they thought was right.”

Ed has since met his surviving siblings.
