Under a new partnership deal, Widener University in Chester has become the “official university” of the Philadelphia Union, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The two parties signed the multiyear partnership deal this week.

Widener will also be the official university of Subaru Park and the $55 million WSFS Bank Sportsplex now being built along the Delaware River waterfront.

The partnership will create “incredible opportunities” for the Widener University community to get “up-close exposure to the inner workings of a professional sports organization from academic and career-related student programming” as well as a chance to attend games and represent Widener at Subaru Park, said Widener President Stacey Robertson.

Subaru Park and Widener University are less than three miles apart in Chester.

The partnership opens up internship and job shadowing opportunities with Union staff for Widener students.

Widener will be able to host activities on the Subaru Park Plaza during six regular-season home matches.

It will be the presenting partner of three outdoor turf fields at the WSFS Bank Sportsplex and at a “Work-in-Sports Camp,” a half-day camp for high school students that want to learn about sports careers.
