College Students Help Save Woman From Chester House Fire

By

College students staying up late after the Super Bowl Sunday helped save Charmaine Burrell after a fire broke out at a twin home in Chester, writes Trish Harman and the 6abc digital staff.

The fire broke out at a twin home on East 19th Street in Chester at around 3 AM. The home is close to Widener University.

Charmaine Burrell and her family were asleep but she woke up hearing smoke alarms going off, then a loud banging on her door.  It was the college students telling her she needed to get out.

“I didn’t know if it was the toaster or what because that’s how sensitive my smoke detector is,” she said. “But he was hollering, banging on doors, ‘Get out.’ It woke everybody up.”

Jarrett Niland was staying with friends across from Burrell’s.  They were home from the city after watching the Super Bowl and were hanging out when they spotted the fire.

They called 911 and began knocking on doors to wake up sleeping residents.

“I’m an Eagle Scout, my boys are former volunteer fire department members,” said Niland. “So we were ready to go no matter what. We weren’t scared at all.”
