Rare Tea Bowls Art Exhibit Comes to Wallingford Arts Center

By

Visitors to the Wallingford Community Arts Center in Wallingford can peruse a rare exhibit of tea bowls and tea ware, and even observe a Japanese Tea Ceremony, reports Dan Sheridan for 6abc.

The Community Arts Center is hosting the Philadelphia International Tea Bowl Exhibition.

The exhibit features about 250 items created by local artists and from around the world, including New Zealand, Ireland, Japan, and elsewhere in the US.

“Basically, the tea bowl is a sculpture. The quest to make a perfect tea bowl is never ending because there’s so many possibilities, “said curator Mark Tyson.

Part of the exhibition includes tea demonstrations from Urasenke Philadelphia, a nonprofit that promotes awareness of Japanese tea ceremonies.

“One of the attractions of a really good tea bowl is how it feels in your hands, said a guest, Jonie Oye of Stroudsburg.

“There are some pieces, they bring tears to my eyes, really. They are so beautiful, the shapes and the colors, the textures” said Maria Papacostaki of Glenside.

Arts Center Executive Director Paul Downie describes the exhibition as a wide look at an art form “that’s traditional but also a living thing that so many artists are continuing to get excited about.”
