How to Become a Leader That People Respect

Maybe you applied for a new leadership role or maybe you were given it based on the trust others have in you. But you know that just being called a leader does not make you one.

You have to exhibit the qualities of somebody that others would want to follow in order for them to respect you. Respect can’t be demanded, only earned.

The site Lifehack discussed this, explaining some of the mistakes that leaders often make. But what is it you need to be doing to make a strong impression? Read on to find out.

Be the Same Person to Everyone

It comes off disingenuous if you only make time for people who can do something for you. Display your true character by being fair and patient with everyone.

Don’t Appear Desperate

When you reach the point that you start pleading with someone to do you a favor, you have already lost respect. It says that you don’t believe in yourself and want others to solve your problem. And for a leader, that does not inspire confidence.

Put in the Time

It takes time for people to build an impression of you. If you are new to your leadership role, don’t expect people to place their unconditional trust in you on day one. You have to prove yourself by putting in the work overtime. But remember, while it takes long to earn respect, it can be lost with one bad decision.

Don’t Forget to Give Respect Back

Just because you are in a higher position of authority does not mean respect is a one-way street. You don’t want people to never say a word against you due to fear of you misusing your power. Earn their loyalty by treating them as capable equals.

Just as it will take time for people to learn what kind of leader you are, it will take you time to learn how to fit in the role. Be patient with yourself and be willing to adapt.
