A new state COVID-19 testing site has opened at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Yeadon, writes Maria Pulcinella for WHYY.

Pa. Gov. Tom Wolf made the announcement Monday, Jan. 3, in response to the “high” levels of omicron variant COVID-19 transmission that have been found in Delaware County and Pennsylvania.

The new drive-thru testing site is located between St. Bernard’s Hall and Friendship Circle.

Testing will be available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Starting Jan. 10, testing will take place Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the first hour reserved every morning for first responders, EMS personnel, and health care workers.

COVID-19 testing, along with vaccinations and boosters, are key tools to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.  The virus has claimed the lives of more than 36,700 Pennsylvanians.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has also applied to a new CDC program that would increase community access to testing. The program would create testing sites in southeastern and south-central Pennsylvania.

The state has asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency for  1 million rapid at-home COVID-19 tests and an increase in its allocation of monoclonal antibody treatments.
