Christmas Prism, the free app from Mike Kane that lets you show off your Christmas lights and track the best Christmas light displays around, is back again this year new and improved, writes Victor Fiorillo for Philadelphia Magazine.

Kane, from Delaware County, now has a sponsor for Christmas Prism. Appropriately, it’s PECO, which helped fund an Android version.

The new version has a PECO Holiday Lighting Contest built-in, with prizes like tickets to the Philadelphia Zoo, Flyers games, and ice skating at the RiverRink.

Christmas Prism lets you register and add photos of your display and seek out other displays that are also registered. You can like displays you’ve visited.

The new version lets you search by zip code. A radius filter is coming, Kane says.

Last year, Kane had 2,200 registered displays by the end of the season and 75,000 downloads.

The self-taught coder says he’s now working on a Halloween display app for 2022.

“That was one of the biggest pieces of feedback I got last year,” he says. “People loved Christmas Prism, and complaints were few and far between. What everybody wanted to know was: When am I doing it for Halloween?”
