Antonio Hayward’s 2009 dream to provide housing to homeless veterans became a reality on Veterans Day when the G&H Veterans House opened in the 400 block of Sharon Ave. in Sharon Hill, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Haywood, better known by his stage name, Tony Jones, thanked everyone for donating time, talent and materials, from trade unions to independent contractors to suppliers, friends and family.

“It’s a lot of mixed emotions,” Jones said Thursday. “From watching all of the struggles that I’ve gone through in Sharon Hill and continued to stay the course and fight … and now, it’s like ‘Finally.’”

The facility contains three two-bedroom apartments for homeless veterans.

Jones spotted the home in 2009 and watched it drop in price to $30,000 but at the time he was unemployed with $2 to his name.

He shared his vision for veteran housing with the owner.

“A week later, I got an email and it said, ‘In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, I am offering you the property at 445 Sharon Ave. for $1,’” Jones said.

Now Jones’ next dream is to build 10 more housing units for vets.
