Nutrition Prof at WCU Honored for Exceptional Teaching for Dietetic Education

Jeanie Subach, an associate professor of nutrition at West Chester University, has been recognized by the Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors (NDEP) unit of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for her exceptional teaching and student mentorship.

Subach earned the NDEP South Eastern Region Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award in the Dietetic Internship category for 2021. She will be honored at the organization’s spring virtual meeting from April 13-15. Advisor to WCU’s Student Dietetic Association, Subach is a Registered Dietitian and Board-Certified Sports Specialist Dietitian.

The WCU College of Health Sciences recognized her with the 2020 Faculty Vision Award for her exemplarity work in upholding the strategic priorities of the college and the university. She used funds from the award to support the Ram Chefs, a culinary program for young adults with developmental disabilities in which students volunteer as coaches to develop cooking independence. The program is expanding this spring with a garden-to-table program to teach gardening practices to the group.

Subach is the nutrition preceptor for the Sports Medicine Fellows in the Crozer Keystone Sport Medicine fellowship program and is a peer reviewer for the Drug Free Sport International and the Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics.

As team captain for the United Methodist Church of West Chester food ministry team, she leads the initiative to provide meals to the Safe Harbor shelter.

Subach created and facilitated numerous nutrition-based programs in the West Chester Area School District and is a frequent presenter on nutrition at area schools and universities. She has acted as spokesperson for numerous food companies, including Campbell Soup, Green Giant, General Mills, Balance Bar, Gatorade, and the Mid-Atlantic Dairy Council. She was also a spokesperson for the NFL Fuel Up to Play 60, a program designed to educate school-age children on proper nutrition.

From 1989-2020, Subach was the sports nutritionist for the Philadelphia 76ers. She held the role of team nutritionist for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999-2013 and for the Philadelphia Flyers from 1989-1997.

More than 1,350 educator and preceptor members comprise NDEP, which is an organizational unit within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. NDEP’s mission is to advocate for and empower educators and preceptors to lead the profession of nutrition and dietetics and to optimize higher education for current and future professionals in nutrition and dietetics.
