Delaware County COVID-19 Death Toll Increases by 39, According to Health Department Statistics

A higher than usual number of COVID-19 deaths in Delaware County have been reported for a second day by the Chester County Health Department.

 On Thursday, 84 deaths were reported in the county.

On Friday, Jan. 29, updated municipal statistics from the health department added 39 more fatalities. The Delaware County COVID-19 death toll stands at 1,190.

According to the municipal statistics, 16 of the fatalities were in Marple, 5 were in Haverford, 3 in Concord, 3 in Newtown, 2 were in Upper Darby, 2 in Clifton Heights, 1 in Radnor, 1 in Springfield, 1 in Ridley,1 in Upper Chichester, 1 in Aston, 1 in Lansdowne, 1 in Ridley Park, and 1 in Thornbury,

Of total deaths reported, 770 were in long-term care facilities and personal care homes.

COVID-19 fatalities have been reported in 45 of the county’s 49 municipalities.

There were 172 new positive COVID-19 cases reported Friday in Delaware County by the Chester County Health Department.

That brings the total number of cases to date to 34,604.

Yeadon Borough continues to have the highest percentage of population being affected by the virus. Total cases are 1,020, or 8.87 percent of its 11,471 population.

Upper Darby has the most cases, with 5,232 cases reported, or 6.3 percent of Upper Darby’s 82,993 population.

There are 754 cases still under investigation, to which no municipality has yet been assigned.

The county has had 193,513 people test negative for the virus. The health department is reporting a 82.65 percent recovery rate.

Cases broken down by age groups, as reported Friday, Jan.29 are:

  • Under 10: 1,297 cases
  • 10 to 19: 3,421 cases
  • 20 to 29: 5,876 cases  
  • 30 to 39: 5,097 cases  
  • 40 to 49: 4,715 cases
  • 50 to 59: 5,399 cases
  • 60 to 69: 4,303 cases
  • 70 to 79: 2,195 cases
  • 80 and over: 2,298 cases

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed as of noon, Jan.29 that there were 9,643  additional cases of COVID-19 reported, for a new total of 834,048.

 There were 159 additional deaths for a new total of 21,462.
