Virtual Classes Or Not, When It Snows, This Kid Wants to Play

Upper Darby School District students can thank an outspoken kindergartener for having a snow day today, reports David Chang for nbcphiladelphia.com.

With coronavirus cases on the rise, Upper Darby students have been learning virtually at home. Upper Darby School District Superintendent Dr. Daniel P. McGarry was considering having online classes Thursday since the snow fall wouldn’t impact home studies much.

Then he attended a Kindergarten Center Home and School Association meeting Monday.

Some parents had their children at the meeting. McGarry asked for opinions about whether to have a virtual day of instruction on Thursday.

One child spoke up.

“I have to be honest; when one of the K-Center students said, ‘I want to play,’ I changed my mind on holding a virtual day of instruction on December 17th, 2020.”

School districts are debating snow days in light of the virtual instruction now available. Philadelphia schools, for example, are not cancelling classes this week.

Campbell’s Soup has launched a campaign to “save the snow day.” You can watch a video here. It has garnered a mixed reaction from parents and educators.

McGarry said parents will be notified by email, social media, website or app the night before if a snow day is scheduled so they can prepare.
