For more than 20 years, Chestnut Hill College has been a leader in the region in serving adult learners looking to begin or complete a certificate, associate, or baccalaureate degree through the Accelerated Adult Degree Program.

According to the Pew Charitable Trusts, seventeen percent of people over 25 years old in Philadelphia have earned college credits but have not yet earned either an associate or bachelor’s degree.

With over one thousand graduates within the past 5 years, Chestnut Hill College’s adult degree program is designed to support adults who want to satisfy an unfulfilled dream or who wish to advance their career by earning a degree, offering 13 degree programs in an accelerated, 8-week format.

Normally, classes are offered in the evenings and on Saturday in a face-to-face, hybrid, and online classroom setting. However, due to the pandemic, all spring classes are currently exclusively online.

Instructors are professionals in their field, which provides an environment that is understanding of the hardships adult students face, as well as a unique networking opportunity to further their career.

“The flexibility, the smaller class sizes. I made a lot of friends there, and we were able to rely on each other,” said Kimberly Murphy, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at Montgomery County Community College, and an alumna of CHC’s AADP.

“The faculty were always helpful — before class, after class, emailing, phone calls,” said Murphy. “I had very long days. Professors being so caring motivated me more to not want to give up.”

Committed to helping their students succeed, AADP offers many Student Support Services, such as one-on-one admissions counseling, supportive advising, a Math Center, a Writing Center, Academic Computer Services, and online tutoring.

CHC also connects students with the Disabilities Resource Center, the Counseling Center, Student Financial Services, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, as well as the Career Development Office.

Success Mentors, who are AADP Alums, are available to provide assistance with technology, writing and information literacy skills, and support through difficult transitions, fostering an environment that helps students overcome the challenges adult learners often face.

“Some adults find the admissions process overwhelming; especially when it comes to locating previous transcripts, applying for financial aid, and how to balance work life and going back to school,” said Director of Admissions for the AADP, April Fowlkes, M.S. “My recommendation is to simply make the call or send the email. We are happy to support and help you navigate through this process.”

CHC has agreements with several two-year colleges such as Montgomery County Community College, Harcum College, Community College of Philadelphia, and Manor College, but accepts transfer credits from all regionally accredited colleges and universities.

Additionally, CHC has partnerships with numerous organizations and businesses, and offers a 10-30 percent tuition discount for their employees, their spouses, and dependent children.

Students also have the option to save money and time by taking advantage of several credit for prior learning options including CLEP exam, challenge exams, portfolio assessment and internships.
