Like the rest of the nation and Pennsylvania, Delaware County is experiencing a rise in the number of new COVID cases reported, sparking worries of a new community spread, writes Jason Laughlin and Bethany Ao for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Friday’s cases in Pennsylvania were the highest than any other day of the pandemic, with 2,219 new cases reported.

Small gatherings like family get-togethers and group sports are a major contributor, state health officials report.

“We’re down to the families now,” said Jeanne Casner, Chester County’s public health director who is also managing Delaware County’s health response. “All the systems have done what they’ve been asked to do.”

Long term care facilities are contributing to surges in Edgemont, which had 16 new cases in two weeks and Prospect Park, which reported 31 new cases over two weeks.

Distancing, mask wearing and hand washing are still urged, but it’s getting harder for people to follow those practices.

“I think COVID fatigue is definitely setting in,” said Shawn Quinn, president of the Pennsylvania College of Emergency Physicians. “People are sick of COVID.”

There’s still no significant rise in hospitalizations and death counts have remained stable.
