Rise in COVID-19 Cases for Those Under 30 Worrying Delaware County Officials

By

Delaware County officials are worried about a rise in COVID-19 cases among those under the age of 30, writes Darryl C. Murphy for WHYY.org.

Among new cases in the county, 40 percent are in that age group.

A large portion of residents contracting the virus did so at New Jersey beaches, at Fourth of July events and socializing without masks, according to contact tracing information.

“We know that some of our younger residents have been socially responsible and we commend them,” said Delaware County Councilwoman Elaine Paul Schaefer via press release.

As cases increase among younger people, there is increased concerned about reopening schools, putting teachers and administrators at greater risk.

Delaware County Council Chairman Brian Zidek described Delaware County as being at a critical juncture. He urged all residents to follow public health safety guidelines.

“While the understanding is that young people are less likely to develop significant symptoms, they are nevertheless capable of spreading the virus with only mild symptoms or even when completely asymptomatic — and this can have a devastating impact on family, teachers, and others in the community who may be in a higher risk pool.”
