Yeadon and Darby Boroughs hosted Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden Wednesday as he continued campaigning on safely reopening the economy, writes Julia Terruso for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Biden spoke with four local business owners at Yeadon Borough’s Carlette’s Hideaway, a soul food restaurant and bar.

Carlette Brooks, who owns the Hide Away with her husband Kenny, told Biden about how her mother, who she hadn’t seen since March, died recently. Only 10 people could attend the service. On top of that the business was hit hard.

“My mother would have never ever thought that I would be where I am right now and she would have been so proud of me,” Brooks said through tears.

In Darby, Biden laid out his eight-part plan for reopening the economy. It includes guaranteed paid sick leave for people with the virus, federally funded testing and PPE for employees who have to work, and a public health corps dedicated to contact tracing.

“This isn’t a debate about whether we reopen,” Biden said. “It’s about how we make reopening work for everyone.”

Workers shouldn’t be weighed down with worries about their safety or what happens if they get sick, he said.
