Students and teachers can return to school July 1 in Pennsylvania counties that are in the yellow or green phase of reopening, writes Rob Tornoe for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Delaware County moves to a yellow phase on Friday, June 5.

Schools will need to meet federal and state health safety guidelines to reopen and must submit the plan to the state Department of Education.

State Education Secretary Pedro Rivera recommended “piloting approaches on a smaller scale” before a broader implementation in the fall.

School districts face significant challenges, writes Laura Meckler and Valerie Strauss for The Washington Post.

Students will need extra help to catch up from being home in the spring.

Counselors will need to help students traumatized from losing family to the coronavirus. Nurses must monitor student and staff health.

Virus containment procedures will be needed—masks for staff members and students, no-touch trash cans, extensive cleaning, limiting student groups and daily temperature checks.

“There is substantial cost that goes along with COVID,” said Eileen F. Shafer, Superintendent of Paterson Public Schools in New Jersey.

This at a time when revenues are down, forcing budget cuts.
