Delaware County Public Schools to Close for One Day to Test Preparedness for Coronavirus
Delaware County’s public schools will close for one day to make sure they are ready should the Coronavirus arrive in the schools, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.
That was the conclusion of superintendents from the county’s districts after meeting Monday with representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and county officials.
“From yesterday’s meeting … every school left that meeting with the idea that we’re going to do a readiness day,” said county Emergency Services Director Timothy Boyce.
Each district will choose when they want to close. Most will probably choose Friday or Monday.
The purpose, Boyce said, will be to exercise policies and best practices, known as a Safety Standown.
The schools will use the day to evaluate work from home policies and online education protocols.
“I think it’s a good thing that schools take a look at their preparedness level,” he said.
Garnet Valley School District has already designated Monday as their preparedness day.
Boyce said county emergency personnel are ready.
“We are all hands on deck focused on preparedness and readiness if this gets worse,” he said.
To date, Delaware County has one reported case of Coronavirus.
