An Alligator Gar Fish Does Not Belong in This Radnor Park Pond, but a Resident Found One

Fenimore Park in Wayne, Radnor Township, had an unexpected visitor in one of its ponds last week, reported mainlinemedianews.com.

Radnor police report an alligator gar fish was found by a resident dead at the park. The fish is normally found in warmer Gulf of Mexico waters. It is among the largest fresh water fish in North America.

The fish cannot live in the cold water, according to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. It was   turned over to the fish and boat commission for preservation and educational purposes, police said.

Police also issued an advisory to residents not to try and relocate rare pets in township parks, Instead, call police who can track down the resources to handle the creature.

According to Wikipedia, alligator gar get their name because of its resemblance to the American alligator, with its broad snout and long, sharp teeth. It’s been reported that alligator gar can grow up to 10 feet.

Alligator gar are sometimes kept as aquarium or pond fish, despite their large size, though in many areas keeping alligator gar as pets is illegal.
